Publisher's Synopsis
Elke Porter presents her rendition of "Who's Who?" in this book highlighting 75+ influential German speakers in Western Canada. Over the past 100+ years, thousands of Austrians, Germans, and Swiss have emerged as success stories in various industries. Some have generously contributed to the lives of their fellow immigrants from Austria, Germany, or Switzerland, while others have established thriving businesses specializing in delicious imported food. Additionally, many have pioneered highly successful manufacturing or industrial companies.
A significant number of individuals showcased in this book dedicated hundreds of hours to volunteer work, fostering the growth and vitality of clubs, associations, charities, and churches. Among them were artists, entrepreneurs, leaders, musicians, pastors, philanthropists, property developers, singers, writers, and volunteers. This comprehensive compilation is likely the final exploration of this topic, and the editing process was both enjoyable and enlightening, providing insights into the rich history of British Columbia and Alberta. The narratives within these pages also shed light on the impact of German-speaking immigrants on key events such as the Gold Rush, Expo '86, and the transformation of small, basic cities into world-class places to live. We express gratitude for their contributions, which have shaped the region's development. Now, it is our collective responsibility to uphold and support the infrastructure they established, ensuring its success for future generations. We extend our thanks to everyone working toward this shared goal. Stay tuned for Book #3 coming Spring 2024.
