Much has been said about love and in what concerns the opposite sex it is frequently trivialized confusing it with romantic feelings and emotions generated by physical attraction and sexual desire, which may be translated as "I want you" rather than "I love you", the first being a selfish feeling and the second an altruistic, unconditional one that implies commitment and a genuine interest for the wellbeing of the other person, regardless of her or his virtues and defects. Passing from a purely romantic relationship to one based on true love, friendship and solidarity requires of a certain degree of affinity of temperament, character, personality and personal attributes such as intelligence and culture which provide for stable and lasting relationship. This essay analyzes these factors and provides a formula to determine if there is such a degree of affinity not to make a mistake in choosing the right partner in life.
