Publisher's Synopsis

45 years in the Worldwide Steel Industry details the author's experience throughout his career and provides glimpses into the future of Steelmaking's efforts to obtain a zero CO2 footprint by replacing coal with hydrogen in the reduction process of iron.

The author's ethic and recognition of people's contributions led to his successful career. John joined a major integrated steel company as a young graduate engineer in the Open Hearth Steelmaking Division.

After intensive training in all aspects of the steelmaking process became Melting Foreman (at a young age) then promoted to General Foreman in charge of the largest billet caster in the world. After 5 intensive learning years he joined a mini mill operation as Melting Manager in charge of three electric furnaces and two billet casting machines. During this time, he also became Manager of Rolling, Finishing and Shipping operations and Manager of Maintenance Department.

Eight years later he joined a global steel foundry operation as Plant Manager then Vice President of Global Foundry Operations. His responsibilities included Electric furnace Operations, AOD process and Finished Products. Additionally, he was accountable for worldwide Quality Assurance, Environment and Plant Engineering. He was also in charge of sales to the US Navy Nuclear Division. (I always wondered if they knew I was a Canadian making tubes for their nuclear subs).

It was an exciting and fulfilling career.
