Inscribed by the author on the title-page: 'Field-Marshal Earl Wavell, homini omnium consensu cum militia tum litteris et humanitate excellentissimo, Desmond Young'. Wavell is thanked at the head of the Acknowledgements for 'appreciations of Rommel as a commander' and is mentioned at numerous points during the text - including for having been unique among British Generals in earning Rommel's explicit praise (p. 148). Rommel is known to have carried a copy of Wavell's Cambridge Lectures on 'Generals and generalship' with him during his north African campaign, though the failure of Wavell's Operation Battleaxe against his German counterpart led to Churchill replacing him with Auchinleck. An excellent association copy
