The expedition is led by Professor Aronnax, a marine biologist. He is accompanied by his faithful servant, Conseil, and a young stowaway, Ned Land. After discovering the Nautilus and its mysterious captain, they are forced to confront a series of dangerous adventures.
The number 20,000 in the title refers to the distance traveled under the sea, rather than a measure of descent that is impossible to calculate.
