Notes: Inscribed by the author (and artist) on the title-page: 'John Gawsworth from Frederick Carter'. The recipient, a poet and editor, was also the publisher of this work - Carter subsequently illustrated his 'Flesh of Cypris'. The etching, only present in these special copies, is of 'The Wandering Jew in Eternity', the central figure of this supernatural short story, in which the narrator - like the author, an artist - encounters an enigmatic fellow in possession of 'the egg of the philosophers in which the secret of creation is revealed'.
