Description: engraved frontispiece and large title-page vignette by M. Burghers; neat repair to the frontis., first and last few quires rather toned, title and frontis. a little dust-soiled, old and faint but consistent water stain running from the gutter, but withal a pleasing copy; pp. [xxxiv], 56, 59-497, [93], 77, [3], folio; contemporary dark blind panelled calf, neatly recornered and rebacked, preserving much of the original gilt design of a dolphin within a roundel, repeating in compartments between five raised bands, red label, red edges; ink ownership: 'Brinley Triby, 1720' (see below).

Notes: The first English edition of the Greek text of Pindar, edited by Richard West and Robert Welsted, both then young fellows at Magdalen College (and both of whom left Oxford shortly afterward, West for the priesthood and Welsted for medicine). It prints the Latin verse translation by Nicolas Le Sueur (1545-1594) along with the Greek text, plus a Latin prose paraphrase, the Greek scholia, Latin notes, a chronology of the Olympiads, multiple 'Lives' of Pindar, and, in a section at the end, a collection of Pindaric fragments.
