Description: FIRST EDITION, 3 vols, half titles, 17 engraved maps and plans, 12 lithographed plates of inscriptions, large folding map; prelims and plates a little foxed, as usual but good; 3 vols: xvii, [3], 513, [1]; viii, 534, [2]; vii, [1], 476, 8vo; contemporary polished tan calf, gilt filleted boards, gilt roll at board edges, marbled edges and endpapers; some light scratches to boards, but a handsome copy.

Notes: Leake's classic history of the Peloponnese, which also charts its socio-economic conditions at the close of Ottoman rule. 'A fascinating work, full of interesting detail, as are all Leake's works. Particular attention is paid to Mycenae and Tiryns, and the plates include plans of both, as well as the beehive tomb at Mycenae' (Blackmer). His works are 'still of considerable importance in the field' (ODNB). Leake (1777-1860) first visited Greece on his return from Syria in 1802, but most of his research materials from that journey were lost 'when the Mentor, on which Leake was travelling to Malt...more
