Description: first edition, first issue, steel-engraved frontispiece and vignette title (including name of publishers), 11 full- or half-page wood-engraved text illustrations, a little toning or light yellowing, upper edges of few leaves a trifle dusty, frontispiece, vignette title and title minimally foxed to upper or outer edge, pp. [12], 175, [1], 8vo, original publisher's crimson cloth, yellow endpapers, covers embossed, title and author's name gilt-lettered to upper board and spine, a.e.g., corners bumped and a little scuffed, head and foot of spine a bit rubbed, boards slightly soiled in places, upper hinge just loosening, modern book label to front pastedown, 19thC ms. autograph 'C.A. Munro' to ffep, his ms. dedication to initial advertisement.

Notes: A very good, overall clean copy, in original boards, of the first edition (first issue) of Charles Dickens's second Christmas book. The first issue bears the name of the publishers as part of the engraved vignette titlepage. The novella was conceived to challenge the tremendous success of 'A Christmas Carol' in the previous year. The title was suggested to Dickens by the sound of bells in Genoa, where he was then residing. He first advertised the work at a private reading in London, organized for his friends in December 1844.
