Description: ONE OF 1,000 COPIES (this unnumbered), printed on mould-made paper, 166 reproductions of drawings, photographs and diagrams, with the folded maps (see below), pp. [ii], 56; [iv], 60, crown 4to, original half brick-red morocco with tan cloth sides, the backstrips lettered in gilt between five raised bands, that to first volume a little faded, the cloth a little soiled and light wear to extremtities, t.e.g., others untrimmed, the second volume with envelope laid in at rear containing two folded maps printed in red and black (as issued), the envelope and endpapers very faintly spotted, each flyleaf with the ownership inscription of 'Sydney Smith' (see below), good

Notes: An important association copy, with the ownership inscription of Clare Sydney Smith, one of the most intimate of Lawrence's friends during the latter part of his career. T.E. Lawrence met the Sydney Smiths during the Cairo Conference of 1921: then, serving under his command at RAF Mount Batten, he formed with the Air Commodore and his wife what she would call in her memoir of Lawrence, 'The Golden Reign', a 'perfect three-sided friendship and close companionship' – in a letter to Lady Astor, Lawrence implies a romantic interest on her part which he does not want to reciprocate. ...more
