Description: FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH, frontispiece portrait of the author tissue-guarded, further portraits of the author at different stages of life added to verso of half-title and endpapers (front and rear), along with those of Amy Ricard and Elizabeth Robins in the role of Hilda Wangel, a portrait of Edmund Gosse laid down to rear pastedown, these all taken from periodicals, further related material adorning endpapers front and rear (see below), pp. [viii], 227, foolscap 8vo, original quarter mid-green cloth with dark-green boards, the lettering to upper board in mid-green, that to backstrip dark-green, the backstrip a little darkened and gently rubbed at ends, top edge green a little faded, contemporary ownership inscription of 'J.M. Notes: An interesting copy. Its original owner, John Malcolm Bulloch, was a London critic, native to Aberdeen, whose books include a work on 'The Art of Extra-illustration' (1903) - a treatise wherein he advocates the use of newspapers and periodicals for the purpose of grangerisation, as he practises here. The printed material utilised includes newspaper clippings concerning Ibsen, amongst which a brief note from Bulloch himself; they are supplemented by the autographs of this work's translator, Edmund Gosse (beneath his portrait), and actress Elizabeth Robins - in both cases, clipped from letters....more
