Notes: Hilda Leyel was a cookery author and herbalist, responsible in large part for reviving in the twentieth-century the tradition of which Culpeper was the apogee. In the year of this book, her star was on the rise - she had founded the Society of Herbalists and opened her shop, Culpeper House, in Baker Street.
