Notes: Scarce, and important. The translator, George Calderon, 'arguably [...] did more than any other figure to popularise and accurately present Chekhov's work' (Warden, Migrating Modernist Performance, p 112); these are the first published translations into English of either of these major plays - and in the case of The Seagull, Calderon had directed its first performance on the British stage (in Glasgow, 1909).
