Notes: First edition of The Power of Darkness, Tolstoy's most acclaimed and controversial drama, published simultaneously in Moscow and St. Petersburg, the latter issue being distinctly less common than the former. The play's production was forbidden in Russia until 1902, but it was staged (in translation) all over Europe from the start.A short way into Act IV someone has corrected a speech attribution in an alarmed red crayon.
