Notes: The dedication copy, inscribed by the author to the flyleaf, 'Frank & Maureen, with love from John, 1965' - this being the critic Frank Kermode and his wife. The printed dedication tot he book reads simply: 'Frank's'. At the head of the summary on the front flap, Wain has added, and underlined, the comment 'Puke-making blurb'! Faintly visible below his portrait and biography on the rear panel is another comment by Wain - the most legible part of which adds 'which nearly did for him' to the closing comment about his recent lecture tour of the US....more
