Notes: The slightly luminous, wraparound landscape designs for the Batsford books were highly distinctive, and soon gained the artist, Brian Cook, a reputation - Cook, in fact, was also the publisher, being a director at the family firm (on his mother's side) of B.T. Batsford. The author of 'Oxford' was a University friend of Betjeman - for whom he contributed to the Shell Guides (editing 'Derbyshire') - and provides an entertaining and opinionated view of the town; he died the following year, a casualty of the War.
