Description: FIRST EDITION THUS, frontispiece and 7 further colour-printed plates tipped in to grey card, the usual adhesive show-through to reverse of card, 32 monochrome collotype plates, some printing in blue, pp. 96, 4to, original purple linen with lettering and decorations in blue, gentle bump at head of spine with a tiny amount of loss to lettering in that area, top edge pale blue more or less faded, a few faint spots to edges, Messel dustjacket design with a couple of spots to fore-margin of rear panel, very good

Notes: Inscribed by Oliver Messel in pencil on the flyleaf, 'With all best wishes to Mr & Mrs Carl, and all congratulations for their Golden Wedding - Oliver Messel, 1939. On the verso of the same, and covering both sides of the half-title, are signatures collected on the couple's Diamond Wedding Anniversary - conspicuous amongst which is that of ballet choreographer Frederick Ashton. Ashton and Messel worked together on Comus in 1940 and the Sadler's Wells production of Sleeping Beauty in 1946; Ashton choreographed Prokofiev's Romeo & Juliet for a production that premièred in 1955.
