Description: engraved serial 'Parlour Novelist' title, complete with half-title, with a Gothic wood-engraved initial to each chapter, an outsize one at the start, pp. [ii, engraved title], [iv], 332, [4, ads], small 8vo, carefully (mostly) opened, apart from the ads, in the original plum horizontal fine ribbed plum cloth, blocked in blind with a strap-work design, lettered in gilt on spine in 2 styles (but not decorated in gilt), unevenly faded, with a hint of damp at the lower edge, front end-papers (yellow glazed boards) discoloured, but still a very good copy

Notes: Scarce Belfast printing, the first separate British printing (albeit in a series, though not in an Austen collection) of Mansfield Park since the second edition of 1816 (which was remaindered: this edition also struggled, and was remaindered). There was a Philadelphia edition in 1832, and it was included in Bentley's edition. The Parlour Library was the first successful series of fiction reprints, founded in 1846 by the Belfast firm of Simms and McIntyre, and continued by Thomas Hodgson and a succession of London publishers into the 1860s.
