Notes: Inscribed by the author on the title-page: 'To a neglected schoolfriend, P. Downie - long may he prosper, Thomas Keneally'. Patrick Downie was amongst Keneally's closest friends at Christian Brother St Patrick's College, Strathfield; blind from birth, Downie relied on his friends to read to him – a labour of love of which, John Molony reports in the Celebration of the author published by the National Library of Australia in 2006, Keneally 'undertook the greater share'.
