Horæ Divanianæ.

(Chess.) WILLIAMS (Elijah )

Horæ Divanianæ.

A Selection of one hundred and fifty original games at chess by leading masters, principally played at the Grand Divan; Accompanied by copious, critical, and explanatory notes, whereby the volume is adapted to the use of players of every degree of skill.

Description: FIRST EDITION, title printed in red and black, a trifle browned, and occasional mild spotting, pp. viii, 178, 8vo, original brown cloth, blind stamped borders to sides with, at the centre of the upper cover, a gilt stamped mounted knight (in armour, &c, not a chess piece), spine slightly faded, minor wear to corners, and the title with initials J (or S?) PH at head of title, and numerous pencil marks to text

Publication Details: Published by the Author, Grand Divan, 101 strand, 1852

Notes: 'A useful book ... its subscription list included Kieseritzky, Lewis and Captain Evans. The collection includes early games by Bird and by Buckle, as well as by Williams himself' (Harding, British Chess Literature to 1914, p. 257). Very scarce: BL only in COPAC. Williams, originally a surgeon in Bristol, was deemed by some an extraordinarily dilatory and slow player, earning himself the sobriquet 'the Bristol Sloth.'
