Description: complete with initial and final blank leaves, 34 lines of type to a page, page numbers (1-128, not counting initial blank and the last three leaves), and initial capitals supplied in red ink (the first initial in red and blue), some light soiling, a few small stains, leaf [xxxii] with a small area of blank corner torn away (touching rubricated folio number), leaf [l] with a closed marginal tear, stiching loosening in places with a little ingress of dust, ff. [132], folio (285 x 195mm), early 17th-century English calf over pasteboard, ruled in blind, rubbed, spine defective at head and upper edges of boards exposed, corners a little worn, no flyleaves present at front (though four at rear) and the hinge strained, Macclesfield copy with bookplate and blind stamps, early ownership inscription (16th century) of Wyllyam Algar to initial blank and several early notes and pen trials (in various hands) to initial and final blanks and rear endpapers (one a quotation from Seneca), plus a scattering of short marginal annotations within the text, the title of the work written in red crayon on first and last blank, recto and verso respectively (possibly in the printer's workshop), preserved in a quarter morocco brown drop-back box by J & S Brockman

Notes: A pleasant and interesting copy of possibly the editio princeps of this Latin adaptation of the story of the fall of Troy, adapted in 1287 from a French original (Benoit de Sainte-Maure's Roman de Troie) of the previous century. The work had been printed earlier in translation - the first publication in any language was a German text, 1474 - and its popularity meant it saw a number of incunabula printings in German, Latin, and other languages, though almost none after 1500.
