Moore's preface to this work discusses the need for the Irish Literary Theatre on which he and Yeats collaborated, part of its programme - expressed here - being the continued promotion of Ibsen that Moore had begun with the Independent Theatre in London - a place where, in Moore's view, great dramatists such as Maeterlinck and Ibsen had 'failed completely'.
