Notes: Inscribed by the author on the flyleaf: 'Captain Lothian Small, with the warm regards of Theodore Marburg, March 1927'. The author was a US Diplomat, who was Minister to Belgium before the Great War; his son, of the same name, was among the first Americans to volunteer for the British Forces in the conflict, before the US had joined the war. The recipient is probably the Glaswegian Labour activist, a minor playwright. The long poem within, 'Divided Duty' is a poem of the American Civil War, originally privately printed under the same title as this collection in 1893; in this collection it join...more
