Notes: Dedicated to Byron, the story is founded on Dante's Paolo and Francesca, and the greater part of it was written during Leigh Hunt's imprisonment. It was severely attacked by his Tory critics, and consequently revised by Hunt for the 1832 edition of his 'Poems,' although he always maintained that it was better in its original form.
