Notes: The solitary copy in COPAC is in the Bodleian, where it is assigned to approx. 1885. The date we give derives from a pencil inscription at the foot, which may indeed be contemporaneous with the date given, April 1871. This is a pleasingly precise date, and in fact the Boat Race in 1871 did take place on 1st April (Cambridge won that one by a length). The balladry is not of a high order, though redolent of the times. The final stanza gives the news that 'the sporting Prince ... will come ...
