Notes: Joseph Johnson has, in the words of the editor of his Letterbook, John Bugg, come to be 'something of a folk hero in Romantic era critical discourse.' His correspondent. Nicholas Thomas Heineken, a fellow Dissenter, writes as a customer. Ware was his first pastoral commission, in about 1785: he was there for only a few years. An obituary appeared in The Christian Reformer; or, Unitarian magazine and review, in 1840, and includes a list of his publications, among them his influential Catechism.
