Orthography; or True spelling, which treats of the sounds and uses of the several letters in all positions; of the division of words into syllables, and the use of points. II. Prosody; or The art of pronouncing syllables in words truly, with tables of words properly accented. III. Etymology; or The kinds of words, which explains the several parts of speech; their derivations and different endings; change and likeness to one another. IV. Syntax, or Construction, which teaches how to connect words aright in a sentence, or sentences together. To which is added, a curious and useful appendix. The seventh edition enlarged, and much improved.

Description: title-page printed in red and black, title-page and last page a bit soiled, last 3 leaves almost loose, some thumbing and a few minor tears in margins, pp. xii, 175, [1, ads], 12mo, without fly-leaves in the original calf, sometime a little crudely rebacked, rubbed, corners worn, various pen trials and marks in text, &c, stamp at foot of title of John Hindle, dated 1775, repeated at the foot of the following page

Notes: Like all early editions, this is rare, just 5 copies in ESTC (BL, Private Collections, Columbia (bis), NL Australia. A London edition of the same year (Columbia only in ESTC) has identical make-up, but has London booksellers in the imprint as well as Slack. 'Anne Fisher compiled several schoolbooks; the earliest noted by Alston is the second edition of A New Grammar: being the Most Easy Guide to Speaking and Writing the English Language Properly and Correctly, which was printed and published in Newcastle in 1750 by Isaac Thompson, her future husband's employer.
