Notes: The author's name on the title-page is given as Charlotte Elizabeth, her usual nom de plume, but the letter is signed with the addition of her married name, Tonna. The letter was occasioned by a series of articles in the Athenaeum by Harriet Martineau recounting her late cure by Mesmerism. The series ran to 6, but Charlotte Elizabeth could restrain herself no longer after the third. Charlotte Elizabeth was a voluminous author, almost all her work being of a religious (and anti-Catholic) nature, and this Letter is no exception.
