Notes: Now scarce, this was a popular book in its day - amongst its admirers was Raymond Chandler, who claimed to have read it 'half a dozen times' and eagerly recommended it to friends, as well as referencing it in his important essay on the genre, 'The Simple Art of Murder' (describing there its 'tragi-comic idealization of the murderer'.
