Description: FIRTS EDITION, with 6 sepia aquatint plate by Alken after the author's originals, and 1 plate engraved by the author, some foxing, pp. vii, 210, [1], 8vo, strictly contemporary (pastedowns watermarked Vans & Sons 1798) half red roan, a little worn at extremities, fly-leaf inscribed 'H. Crump from her beloved father', Crump bookplate

Notes: Holmes (fl. 1789-1804), an Irish artist, claims in 'To the Reader' that Irish Scenery had never been described: this is not strictly true - Abbey describes 2 works published in 1795; but this is one of the earliest. The interval between the Tour and the publication of the book witnessed the 1798 Rebellion, which Holmes refers to as 'the late unhappy and blood-stained events.' Harriet Crump married the 10th Baron Berners, the Reverend Hon. Robert Wilson - the book was latterly in the collection of the 14th Baron, Lord Berners, at Faringdon House....more
