Description: engraved portrait frontispiece, the final blank discarded, some worming in the upper and lower margins, not affecting text, that at the top petering out, that at the foot a single hole throughout, pp. [xxxii], 38, [14], 322, [20], folio, late 18th-century sprinkled calf, rounded spine with gilt ruled compartments, black lettering piece, cracking to upper joint (but sound enough), slight wear to extremities, with one small abrasion to upper cover, spine slightly faded,early inscriptions to titlepage,engraved armorial bookplate of T. Vasey Dawson, later 'Celtic Revival' bookplate dated 1893 (signed A.G.) below this, with a quotation from the psalms at head, armorial shield in the fore-ground leaning against a tree in the vignette of a house at the foot of mountains

Notes: The second edition of Gilbert Watts's English translation of Bacon's 'De Augmentis Scientiarum'. Bacon had originally published an essay under the title 'The Advancement of Learning' in English in 1605, but always intended to translate the work into Latin to reach a wider audience. He eventually published his Latin version, by this time reworked and expanded to more than twice the size of the original, in 1623; Watts's first English edition of Bacon's full work appeared in 1640.
