Description: 2 vols., woodcut arms of the Dauphin on the titles, rear free end-paper to vol. ii a bit foxed and ragged at the lower edge, hints of foxing here and there, pp. [viii], 312; [iv], [313-] 613, large 4to, sumptuously bound in turquoisey-green straight-grained morocco, multiple gilt fillets to sides enclosing a roll tooled border, gilt rules on either side of, and within, raised bands on spine, gilt edges, gilt inner dentelles, minor wear to corners, spines a trifle faded, engraved armorial bookplate of the Earl of Clare, ticket of J Rodwell, Successor to Mr Faulder 46 New Bond Street

Notes: One of 200 copies on Papier-vélin. Copies are sometimes found with the plates of Monnet and Tilliard, but the book was issued without them. It is not clear whether Rodwell is the binder, or the bookseller: for an almost identical binding see the BL's Database of Bookbindings (searchinmg under Rodwell and Faulder). Rodwell, the bookseller was a John: there was a bookbinder called James Rodwell. To add to the confusion there was an Oxford binder by the name of John Rodwell active at the same time (see The Book Collector, 1953, p. 184). In any event, the binding probably is English....more
