Description: FIRST EDITION, with 4 folding engraved plates, E1 and Y1 trimmed at fore-margin (but not so far as the text), minor spotting and staining, pp. [viii], 148, small 4to, later boards (stab holes visible), slightly soiled, and loss of surface to spine, ownership inscription at head of title of Jean-Jacques d'Ortous de Mairan, an inscription above this cropped, inscription at foot of title partially erased but the date 1818 in evidence, contemporary or near contemporary marginal annotation in 2 hands

Notes: A rare work on the conchoid of Nicomedes and cissoid of Diocles, treated in the manner of classical geometry. These curves were studied by Greek geometers because of their application to the solution of several classical problems, such as the duplication of the cube and trisection of an angle, but it was not until the 16th century, with the publication of the works of Pappus and Eutocius, that they became generally known.
