Notes: De Staël's first novel, first published in Geneva in 1802, with a clutch of English editions swiftly following. Its politics - the novel explores the freedom of women in aristocratic society - displeased Napoleon, and he exiled the author. In a review in the LRB of a new translation by Avriel Goldberger (1995) Margaret Anne Doody traces the novel's connections with and influence on Fanny Burney and Jane Austen. The Bodleian have a copy annotated by R.L. Edgeworth.
