Description: 3 vols., with 28 engraved maps and plates, mostly folding, in vols. i & ii, 3 maps and 3 plates in vol. iii, occasional light browning, some maps reinforced at folds, pp. [xviii], 376; [3-] 336 (?lacking half title), [2]; [viii], 222; 12mo, fairly recent calf, single gilt fillets on sides, red lettering pieces on spines, a trifle rubbed at extremities

Notes: Lahontan's account of his travels in the Great Lakes region is one of the most important travel narratives of the day, but his claims to have journeyed west of the Mississippi are highly doubtful. However, his assertions had great impact on geographers of the time, who adopted much of his imaginary geography. The most notable map is the "Carte Que Les Gnacsitares. Carte de la Riviere Longue." depicting an imaginary river extending westward from Lake Superior. The "Carte Generale de Canada" is also considerably confused geographically.
