Description: single sheet broadside, approx. 250 x 120 mm (see below), defective at head with the loss of 2 lines of the title, variously folded with damage to folds without however serious loss of letters, top portion of title and 7 lines separated, laid down on an album leaf, early 19th-century transcription of a note apparently originally written out on the verso of the broadside

Notes: An unrecorded broadside on the death of Nelson. Of the first 2 lines of the title only the terminal letters survive, but one can surmise that they read 'Verses on the Death of' perhaps with an adjective before Verses. The 42 lines of verse are dated at the end 'Weymouth, Nov. 13, 1805.' The transcription at the foot of the album leaf is a response, also in verse, with the initials W.H.W appended. A footnote identifies 'a Seaman' mentioned in the verses as 'my Brother', who served as a midshipman on the Agamemnon in the West Indies under Nelson, distinguishing himself at the Battle of Saintes...more
