Notes: The scarce, anonymous, first edition: there were trheee more enlarged editions until 1843. Pine-Coffin seems not to have seen a copy as he does not provide a collation. We learn from the Introduction that Brown was a school companion of Sir Walter Scott, that he spent many years abroad, assiduously acquiring foreign languages and shunning the society of his countrymen.
