Notes: A very thorough treatise, as well as rare - BL only in COPAC and WorldCat. Among the incidentals are a chapter on the pipe (soldiers should be encouraged to smoke - not when on patrol at night of course - as it keeps them awake and happy), and a longer chapter on Medical Instructions. The advertisements at the end begin with an announcement of Major Begbie's translation of Clausewitz ('the first volume is nearly ready for the printer'), but this does not seem to have come to fruition and English readers had to wait until 1873....more
