Almost without exception, Freud himself and the editors of his work who succeeded him excluded his scholarly publications from the time before psychoanalysis was founded from his Complete Works. Based on all of Freuds known pre-psychoanalytic works up to 1985, this study reconstructs the practical and theoretical process of development up to the Studien uber die Hysterie (Studies on Hysteria). This analysis shows clearly the influence of the advanced contemporary approaches of neuroanatomy and neurophysiology in this process, how the connection was made through Joseph Breuer to Charcots and Berheims research on hysteria in France and finally the problems pertaining to the theory of science which Freud faced in the detachment from the scientific paradigm of the research on psychoanalysis. Freud selbst und die Herausgeber seiner Schriften in seiner Nachfolge haben fast ausnahmslos alle seine wissenschaftlichen Publikationen, die vor dem Zeitpunkt der Begrundung der Psychoanalyse liegen, von der Aufnahme in die Gesammelten Werke ausgeschlossen. Die vorliegende Studie unternimmt es, anhand samtlicher bis 1985 bekannter voranalytischer Schriften Freuds den praktischen und theoretischen Entwicklungsprozess bis zu den Studien uber die Hysterie zu rekonstruieren. Aus dieser Analyse wird deutlich, welche Rolle in diesem Prozess die fortgeschrittensten zeitgenossischen Positionen von Neuroanatomie und Neurophysiologie spielen, wie die Anknupfung uber Joseph Breuer an die franzosische Hysterieforschung und -therapie Charcots und Berheims erfolgte und schliesslich welchen wissenschaftstheoretischen Problemen sich Freud gegenuber sah in der Ablosung vom naturwissenschaftlichen Paradigma der Forschung zur Psychoanalyse.
