Publisher's Synopsis
It is the time of the English Civil War, the time of Cromwell and King Charles I. The story follows the lives, love and conflicts of a young country girl and the son of a cloth merchant. This is the time when every home from palace to the poorest hovel is touched by the fear of being denounced by brother or neighbour. Catherine is the daughter of a Puritan strip farmer in a small village. She knows nothing of Kings or Parliament. Martin is the Protestant son of a cloth merchant. He is a supporter of Parliament and as war threatens he chooses to fight against the King. His brother Robert is a determined Royalist and so the brothers find themselves on opposite sides. This is a coming of age tale with many conflicts, trials and dangers to survive before Catherine and Martin can look forward to a more peaceful future.
