Il conjectura avec raison que c'� tait -pour servir de phare aux bateliers a leur retour, que ce feu avait �t� allum� � l'entr�e d'une grande caverne o� le lac semblait p�n�trer. Les Montagnards di rig�rent..leur esquif en droite ligne vers cette caverne; et quittant ensuite leurs ra mes ils l'abandonn�reut a l'impulsion qu 'il avaitrecue. La barque doubla la petite poin te ou plate - forme du rocher o� �tait allum� le feu; et, apr�s avoir parcouru deux fois sa longueur, elle s'arr�ta � l'endroit o� la caverne, qui, l� m�me �tait couverte en forme d'arcade s'�levait au-dessus du ni veau des eaux du lac, par cinq ou six larges plates - formes de roc, montant d'une ma ni�re si douce et si r�guli�re qu'on aurait pu les appeler un. Escalier naturel. En ce moment} on jeta tout � coup une grande quantit� d'eau sur le feu. Il s'�teignit en sif ?ant, et avec lui disparut la lumi�re qu'il avait procur�e jusqu'alors. Les bras de quatre ou cinq Montagnards enlev�rent Waverley dela barque le mirent sur ses jambes, et l'eutra�n�rent en quelque sorte dans les entrailles de la caverne. Il fit quel ques pas dans les t�n�bres; il entendait le bruit confus de plusieurs voix qui parais saient sortir du centre du rocher, puis ayant tourn� un angle de ce souterrain il eut de vant ses yeux Donald Bean Lean et tout ce composait son �tablissement.
