Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from The Transvaal Trouble: How It Arose, Being an Extract From the Biography of the Late Sir Bartle Frere

After thirty-three years Of highly distinguished service in India he returned to England and was made a Member of the Council of India. In 1872 - 3 he conducted a mission to the East Coast of Africa for the purpose of suppressing the Slave-trade. In 1876 he accompanied the Prince of Wales to India. For his various services he was made a Baronet and a Privy Councillor.

Shortly after his return he was appointed by Lord Carnarvon High Commissioner of South Africa and Governor of the Cape.

In view of the painfully intense interest which at the present moment centres in South Africa and the Transvaal, and of the absence of any other detailed account of the events which took place there during his stay, it is believed that a reprint of so much of his Life and letters as relate to South Africa, will have its value as a contribution to a just knowledge of the facts. NO apology, therefore, is made for the truncated form in which it is issued.
