The analysis of the vocal elements of the English language, and the minute description which is given of their organic formation, will be found important, not only to the American who is desirous of accurate knowledge upon this subject, but also to the foreigner who is learning to speak our vernacular tongue. And the engravings, indicating the most favorable postures of the mouth in the energetic utterance of the ele ments, will be found a valuable auxiliary in the acquisition of this knowledge.
The accentual marks in common use indicate, simply, the accented syllables and the in?ections of the voice; the au thor's accentual marks not only do this, but they indicate the melody also. Hence, by the aid of these marks, in connection with the phonetic spelling, foreigners as well as natives will not-only be able to pronounce every word correctly, but to give to each sentence its proper elocutionary expression.
The part on gesture is extracted, principally, from Austin's Chironomia, a work which is extremely rare, and one whose great size and expense are insuperable obstacles to its general introduction. All, however, which the Chironomia contains on the subject of gesture, that is particularly valuable, is here presented to the reader within the compass of a few pages.
