Publisher's Synopsis

"Children must be taught how to think, not what to think." -Margaret Mead

The Nurturing Education Skills Training Program (NEST) is a community-based, home like setting attached to a school, church or elder care facility. It is an innovative, unique concept in parent empowerment and early childhood education for young urban area children. For many children it will be the beginning of their first out of home learning experience.

What is unique about this program is that it is intergenerational and community based program designed for both parents and their children. This program emphasizes the importance of intergenerational support in blending the family in the growth, development/education of young children.

This Curriculum Will:

1. Teach participants how to take proper care of their belongings (hanging up clothes, putting things away) and the importance of keeping things neat and in order.

2. Teach organization of household, e.g., beds in bedrooms, food in pantry, dishes in sink in kitchen, etc.

3. Help participants to think in terms of "otherness" rather than "me, myself and I.

4. Teach appreciation of artists, workers and citizens in the community.

5. Prepare displays which help participants think about the themes of living at home, going to the NEST program being a citizen of the community, responsibility as helpful humans, and duty of being a sister/brother, in a blended, intergenerational family, two parent or single parent family.
