The Journal of Major George Washington was the first of George Washington's published writings and describes his trip in 1753 to the "Ohio Country," the region around and north of what is now modern-day Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This edition includes copious notes and commentary to help explain the time, people, and places of this early diplomatic mission to the outposts of the French army that was laying claim to the region. An added appendix contains extracts of the Journal of Christopher Gist, the frontiersman who served as the guide for the 21-year-old Major Washington.
