Publisher's Synopsis

  • While The Faraway Nearby does provides documentation of the best of Canadian landscapes and history, it differs from other visual roundups of Canadian history in that this is not all it depicts. While many Canadians condemn the US' development of the first atomic bomb, a blind eye has often been turned to the fact that the uranium used to produce the bomb was readily allowed to be mined in Canada. Images of uranium mines sit across from those documenting the 1970 FLQ crisis, in this, the first pictorial to critically offer an oversight of all segments of Canadian society.

  • Images will be contextualised in a series of specially comissioned essays from Paul Roth, Director of The Ryerson Image Centre, Gerald McMaster, Plains Cree and Blackfoot Curator, artist, author and former Director of The Art Gallery of Ontario and Denise Birkhofer, Collections Curator at Ryerson. Finally, Gaelle Morel, Exhibition Curator at Ryerson will provide an case study on the Canada's role in the first World War.

  • This title is produced in the image of popular titles such as Robert Frank's The Americans.
