T exactly half-past two every afternoon, the minister of St. Stephen's opened the gate of the manse garden, and walked down the street to the post office for his afternoon mail. So regular was he in this habit that the people on the Avenue could almost tell the time of day by his going, as though he were the sun. And Mrs. Harding, who lived a few gardens above, and who was an invalid suffering severely from too much money and nothing to do, often timed her afternoon arrangements by him, as she watched him from her high tower-like room.
