Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Shakespeare's Pronunciation: A Shakespeare Reader in the Old Spelling and With a Phonetic Transcription

IN order to illustrate What I believe to be the pronunciation of Shakespeare, I have selected a variety of extracts for 02052 0068 reading from Venus and Adonis, The Rape of Lucrece, and the Sonnets, and from all the plays in the first Folio, With the exception of The Comedy of Errors, Henry VI., Troilus and Cressida, and Titus Andronicus. I venture to hope that the familiar passages here presented in a pho netic form Will thus gain a new antiquarian interest, without losing anything of their old power and charm. In Spite of the deplorable state of the text and other difficulties I have not resisted the temptation to include in this unpretending Shakespeare revival part of the amusing French scene in Henry V.
