Publisher's Synopsis
This is a general introduction to George Eliot's work as an essayist, translator and poet and should be useful as further reading for anyone studying her novels. The essays show a wit and energy of a kind quite different from that of the novels, which they nevertheless illuminate.;They are divided into four sections: book reviews, mostly from the "Belles Lettres" section of the "Westminster Review"; the major long essays she wrote for the magazine immediately before she started writing fiction; shorter pieces, where many of her ideas can be found; and some later essays from her last published book "Impressions of Theophrastus Such".
