Natsume Soseki's full-length novel, written in 1908, constitutes a love trilogy along with Things Coming Later and The Door. The protagonist Ogawa Sanshiro, after graduated from Kumamoto's high school, was admitted to an university in Tokyo. After came to Tokyo, a completely different place from his previous understanding, under the impact of the modern civilization and modern women, he was confused at a loss. He was surrounded by three kinds of world at the same time, one is the hometown of Kumamoto, the second is the world of knowledge where teachers Yeshigo and Hirota are located, the third is the flashy world. Sanshiro was gradually attracted by the flashy world where Miyako, the girl he fall a hidden love with, is located. Sanshiro was passionately devoted to Miyako, but Miyako's attitude is ambiguous. She mentioned the phase "lost lamb" to Sanshiro several times, but eventually married with his brother's friend. The ordinary young people also learned a lot from the exchange with all kinds of people in the metropolis.
